First Test Results

Hello all.

Same backstory, got rid of my pool guy and decided I can do this myself. Been researching here thanks to a friend, purchased my TF-100 kit and easily tested my pool at lunch today. I've also logged my test results in the Pool Math app. Forgive my ignorance at this point but wanted to share my results to better understand what I need to do to adjust the values that need to be increased.

The only thing that you need to currently worry about (assuming your water is clear) is raising up your FC level with liquid chlorine and maintaining in range for your CYA according to the FC/CYA Levels.


Edit: and also update your signature to contain your pool and equipment details ;)

I'll add liquid chlorine per the recommended in the Pool Math app (31oz). I also have an inline chlorinator for tablets. Do I need to factor in the inline tablets portion or just start by adding the liquid chlorine then recheck and go from there based on your experience?

An expert can answer better, but tablets either add cya or...calcium maybe?
The tabs are not straight chlorine, CL needs something to bind to in dry form.

Most here either don't use tabs, or use sparingly for vacation etc. Either straight bleach, salt water generator or combination.

If you would, put your pool information in you signatue to help them know what they are dealing with. Profile, settings, signature I think.
If you have swg for example, cya should be 70 to 80.

Gotcha. Makes sense.

I did add my pool info but apparently it didn't stick to my signature. I'll log in from the pc later. Been doing everything from my phone so probably posted it in the wrong location :)
 
Some have seen CYA rise even when they turn the chlorinator off. If you don't want your CYA to rise, try to get all the pucks out when you turn it off. If you do want to push it up to 50 with the pucks, make sure to keep an eye on CYA while you're using them and stop as soon as you hit your mark. Also, once you stop using the pucks, your pH probably won't be as low as you're seeing now and you will likely need to use acid to lower it more often than you normally do.

Side note. Just tried buying liquid chlorine at Leslie's and rep said they dont carry sell it anymore.

That's just funny. And in Texas where pools are common. Pool store got no chlorine...

Regular bleach works just fine. It's usually 6%. Pool Math will determine how much bleach you need. Make sure to get basic bleach, no colors, no additives, no scents, no splashless, no anything extra. It's far cheaper too.

This is a fair point. Although if they stop using pucks and start using liquid chlorine, the pH is going to rise and things will be more in balance.

The acidic tablets can certainly drive the TA and pH down and eventually cause damage to the pool and equipment.

Interestingly enough, our ph seems to constantly increase and I have to add ph down to get it back in normal range. On a side note, before finding this site and doing my own test for the first time today I bought one of those phin devices that monitor and send chemicals to adjust. Hope y'all don't ban me for sharing that detail :) Also, dont get me started on that thing.

At any rate, I'm going to be doing this myself from now on so we'll see how it goes. Again, appreciate all the help already provided.
 
Quick follow-up and question.
So I've been testing now and getting the hang of it and all is seemingly well. I had a strange test result today. I initially noticed that my calcium hardness tested much higher than normal... instantly caught my attention. Then I happened to notice that I used the graduated cylinder that came with my TF-100 test kit vs the graduated cylinder that came with my Taylor Speed Stir. So I tested Calcium hardness again with the cylinder that came with the Speed Stir and the result came back where Ive been seeing for resuts. So I then tested again with the Other TF-100 cylinder and the result was high again.

I noticed that the 10ml line doesn't appear to be the same on both cylinders. The TF-100 10ml mark is more than the Speed Stir cylinder 10ml mark.

All other tests came back the same results regardless of cylinder used.

So am I just being neurotic or what? Obviously the results are different between the two for the Calcium Hardness Test.

My Pool math logs are updated but to note the differences on Calcium Haedness between the two cylinders:
Speed Stir cylinder10ml result: 300
TF-100 cylinder 10ml result: 475

City water test calcium hardness results
Speed Stir cylinder 10ml result: 175
TF-100 cylinder 10ml result: 225
