How bad did I screw up?

We have a brand new 18x36 inground, filled with water last night. This morning I tested fc and it was 0 as expected and I added 96oz of 10% walmart liquid chlorine to get me to 3. CYA was also 0 and I put 4 pounds of leslies powdered stabilizer in a stocking and it has been dissolving all day in the skimmer with about 25% remaining.

I tested the water again after dinner and the FC was back to 0, I assume it got burned off because of the low CYA so I added another 160 oz of 10% to bring it to 5 overnight. The last test showed 5.5 and now I am panicking that I overdid it, and reading posts about damaging the liner and equipment with high chlorine and no cya. With no sun to burn it off over night am I in trouble?

Go squish the rest of that sock, the remaining 25% should disperse soon. If you put CYA in the pool, it's there and you can call it as is there even if 25% hasn't dispersed yet. Don't worry. .5ppm over target is fine. I routinely/nightly dose 1ppm over my target because someone may swim or maybe the sun will actually be out all day, or I might be late dosing. You're good.

Also, your pool and equipment is actually safe up to Mustard SLAM level. Your body is safe to swim up to SLAM level for your CYA level. Relax, go have an adult beverage and enjoy your new pool!

You should take your finger off the panic button and relax.. Everything will be fine.

What CYA level were you shooting for? 4 lbs (64 oz) will only add about 17 ppm to a 28K pool...

Thanks, that’s helpful. I saw posts about fc of 5 with 0 cya bleaching liners and had visions of ruining my pool on the first day.

Our pool builder estimated 24-25k gallons because of our interior steps.

I was originally aiming for 40 bc we get full sun all day, but i only had 4 pounds and used it all. I figured it was safer to go slow and increase instead of overdoing it. I bought two canisters of clorox cya at Walmart this afternoon, should I go throw some out there right now?

I think I'd wait overnight on the CYA. There's a chance it'll register by tomorrow and then you can see how close you are with your volume estimate. It could take a few days to register though, so tomorrow add enough for 10ppm only and see where you end up.

You are correct, go slowly on the CYA. You don't want to overshoot it. But once you add the sock tomorrow, call it as if it's in there and chlorinate as required for FC/CYA Levels.
