Dirty Pool

I'm having trouble keeping the DE and other sediment out of the pool. As I vacuum the pool a lot of the debris that was vacuumed returns. And by the next day, the pool looks like it had not been vacuumed in a week. Is my problem in the DE filter or the multi port valve?

Thanks

I believe you have a DE filter with grids, similar to this one. Open up the tank and check the grids (#14) for tears, the manifold (#11) for cracks, and most overlooked - the health of the o-ring (#12).

Thanks for the quick reply. So the problem can not be the the multi port valve (#23)?
chances are it's not, unless the multiport valve is misdirecting and is causing the flow to bypass the filter, and act as if it's on recirculate.

When you are vacuuming, is there pressure in the tank?
If you open up the bleeder valve, does water gush out of the filter while vacuuming?

yes, the tank has about 15 lbs. of pressure and water does gush out if opened

Sounds like it's internal to the filter. I would suggest checking the 3 things I mentioned above. Be especially careful that if you do replace the o-ring (#12), that the summer high school kid at the pool supply store sells you the correct o-ring. See if you can identify the OEM part number ahead of time, and only buy that one.

I pulled out the grid cluster, cleaned and inspected each filter and found that none of the grids had a nick or tear. The manifold looked solid as did the o-ring. So, is it possible that the debris is coming from a multi-port gasket? Is opening the multi port valve the next option?

I would say yes, it is possible that the “spider gasket” in your multi-port could be worn and recirculating unfiltered water. This would send dirt (And perhaps DE ) back into the pool. Not sure which multi-port you have, but read about replacing the gasket online first. I’m sure you can even find a video on YouTube.
