My Taylor kit and Leslie's dipstick both agree that my Free Chlorine is 3ppm. The Taylor reagent R-0004 reads a pH of 7.4 while the dipstick reads 6.8-7.0. Why the difference?

That's what I thought, but I had been reading some on-line articles that say the strips are not all that bad. Perhaps pH is not very reliable on strips.
Ha, no I hadn't read that here. Do you feel the Taylor reagent and kit is pretty reliable for pH (at normal chlorine levels)?
Within reasonable cost, The drops based pH (Phenol red) is as good as it gets. It certainly is good enough for the accuracy and repeatability that TFP requires.
Consider that if you were making alterations in your chemistry based on that strip pH, which reading would you use? 6.8 or 7.0? Huge difference between them.

I'll go to exclusive use of the phenol red drops. I was shocked to see how far off the test strips were on pH. Too bad because they sure are easy to use!
