Jandy Truclear with VS Pump Run Times

I attempted searching for my answer, but maybe I am asking incorrectly. This is a new install and I have a Truclear and a Hayward VS pump where i can specify RPM's and whatnot. If I'm understanding this properly, the way the setup is done, basically whenever my pump is running the SWG will be running as well. Is that wise? My base timer for the VS has an RPM set of 875. I would think that'd be way too low to for the SWG to function properly. Can I assume that if it doesn't have enough flow that it just won't be active or what? What if I want to run the pump without the SWG going? Am I going to have to manually turn it off every time I want to do that?

I can't think of a single reason to have the pump running and not to be generating chlorine. I never run my pump at a speed less than what is needed to turn the SWCG's flow switch on.

The SWCG has a controller of some type and you just adjust the output percentage you want.. The higher the percentage the more chlorine the cell will make.

When new, you should test your FC each day about the same time... If the FC is low you increase the percentage, if the FC is high you reduce the percentage... Keeping your FC in the proper range per this chart.. FC/CYA Levels

After a few days you will get the feel of how you pool uses FC and you can cut back on the testing.

I "assume" you signature is not longer valid... please up date it so we don't get confused.. Especially me, as I am easily confused... :mrgreen:

of course, i get how they work. i am not a newb by any means. i just like to circulate my water throughout the day and don't always want to be adding chlorine to it. my question was more along the lines of "assuming" if it's on it's generating chlorine


and yes, my sig is old. just had a house built and this pool install was "done" yesterday... i say "done" cause i didn't want them messing with my water. i'll handle that part dudes... lol

It is of course your pool and you can do whatever you please... I run my pump 24/7 and the SWCG runs 24/7 because I like to generate a little chlorine all the time and I run 24/7 because I like skimming all the time.. For me, doing it this way makes things very simple. And if anything, I am simple.. :)

If you want to externally control when the SWCG is running, then you should install a timer that controls the power to the SWCG's power supply. Then you could adjust the time the cell is on..

Reducing the pump speed to turn off the flow switch is not really a good idea.. If the flow switch failed, and the cell gets power when there is not enough water flow, it is rare, but possible for the cell to explode.

If you set the SWG's output at 20% then it will only make chlorine for 20% of the time that it is turned on. If you run the pump for 24 hours then the SWG would only be making chlorine for 4.8 hours of the day if the SWG has enough flow to generate chlorine.

I would find out the low speed limit of the pump when the SWG stops producing and program the pump to never run below that speed. Give it an extra 10% speed increase to keep it safe.
 
If you have a variable speed pump run it 24x7. That is what most do that have VSPs and SWGs. I do. My pump runs at 1500-2000rpms minimum which uses under 400 watts of power. Doing this makes it very easy to get the proper amount of chlorine added to your pool.
 
Where did you read about this? I was told if you have swg turned on, let’s say 60%, then your swg will produce chlorine at 60% of it’s potential, NOT 60% of the time your pump is on.

The way I read your statement is the swg runs at 100% no matter how long your pump is on but it only runs at the % you set it at based on your pump time.

Incorrect. When the SWCG is generating, it is full on. If set at 50%, the cell is on 30 minutes of every hour (or some variation of that) when it is powered.
