I am trying to save money can feel a sense of accomplishment in maintaining my pool. This is the first pool I am learning to maintain. I live in a late 70's home and so far have kept the pH in range and kept the pool from going green. Now to tackle cleaning my filter.

Welcome to TFP! I would recommend reviewing our ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry, PoolMath, tool, Test Kits Compared, and those Vital Links below in my signature. Also make sure to update your own sig when you get a moment. Lets us know what questions you have and we'll be glad to help.

Hi there, I have added my signature. I hope it helps. I do have a question. I have been doing well since taking over maintenance of my pool, except when I noticed kick back from the return jet after cleaning filter. Also, when adding DE, I see cloudiness return to the pool. I recently had an algae problem that has been resolved, but the return of debris is discouraging. Any tips?

Welcome to TFP.

What test kit are you using?

I suggest you review ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and Pool School - Trouble Free Pool to learn about Trouble Free Pool Care (TFPC) methods. They are a bit different then what pool stores tell you to do.

I have the test strips and the drops. Strips result in similar results compared to drops. I use the strips mostly and the drops once a month for reassurance.

I used the pool math calculator to help get the levels accurate, this has been the most help. A super valuable pool. Also used the calculator to determine the volume of my pool.

As Pat mentioned, to properly manage your pool water chemistry you need to get a proper test kit. Strips and OTO type tests do not cut it. You very likely did not resolve your algae issue using that testing. To do a SLAM Process, you need more precise testing methods.
