All I know is that new Coke was terrible. But, very happy that it's quite easy to find the Mexican Coke around here (the beverage!) that uses cane sugar instead of HFCS...it's so yummy!

Many years ago coca-cola wanted to change the formula for coke from using cane sugar to using high fructose corn syrup because it's a lot cheaper than cane sugar, but they had a problem. Coke with hfcs (high fructose corn syrup) didn't taste exactly the same as coke with cane sugar (try some mexican coke). They knew that if they just switched, and people could compare the two side by side, people would know the difference, and refuse to buy the HFCS coke, so they came up with a plan. They brought out "New Coke". Of course people didn't like New Coke and after a few months they claimed to have made a mistake and they brought back "Classic" Coke, but with one important difference, it had HFCS as the sweetener instead of cane sugar. Since it had been a couple of months since they stopped making coke with cane sugar the supply of it was depleted so it wasn't readily available to compare it and the "Classic Coke" side by side for most people. Given the fact that it was a lot better than "new coke" the public bought it.
Now for the kicker, almost every marketing professor I've ever met teaches (or taught until enlightened) that "New Coke" was a terrible marketing mistake, when in fact it was a brilliant marketing ploy that worked beautifully.
That HFCS conspiracy theory falls apart when you look at the fact that Coke started using HFCS in 1980. There is no conspiracy, it was just terrible marketing.
