First Test, Suggestions?

I'm the new owner of a ~9,000 gallon pool/spa. My spa spills in the the pool. Am I correct to combine these amounts?

We opened the Pool in mid June and have had pool service until now. Here are my results.

Yes, they are one body of water - combine them

You need chlorine in the water now. If you have a bottle of plain bleach, it will get some chlorine in the water.

How does the water look and what are you using to get the test results?

Thanks for the reply! The water started to cloud this morning. In the past I would throw 8oz of Shock in to keep it at bay. I've updated my signature with my setup.
 
Welcome to TFP...

A few things to do ASAP...get bleach in the pool (just regular bleach, no additives or scented) and read the label on the bleach for the percentage (6, 8.25, 12 whatever). Buy a test kit (see link)! Create a signature with pool info. This will help you help yourself and for others to help you...

Is your pool 9000 or 90000 gallons? Did you get the numbers from a pool store. CYA is not an in between number (55) it will be 50, 60, 70. Here are a few links to get you going.

Your CYA is 60 (we round up) . See [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA] which says for CYA 60 you have a FC target of 7-9 and should not let the FC drop below 5. Test your FC and PH every day and see that they stay within Pool School - Recommended Levels

Thank you, I think I'm going to put enough bleach in to bring the FC to 8 and go from there. I have a Taylor K-2006. It is 9,000 gallons.

Got it on CYA rounding. I've read a lot of the articles, but thanks for additional links.
 
Added 150 fl oz of 6% bleach to bring it to 8ppm as indicated by the pool math calculator, running pump for two hours and will test in the morning. How long do I want to run the pump before testing?
 
30 minutes of circulation prior to testing is sufficient.

If you had cloudy water and 0 FC it would be wise to SLAM Process. Read the article to understand the process.

Thank you. I believe I need to lower my pH slightly before starting. I'm also leaving town for 3 days this week and am concerned about what to do with the pool.

Should I remove my pool cleaner and tubing while adding liquid chlorine or SLAMming?

Latest results, not great. Also did an acid demand test and I added 3 drops.

Your CYA is 60. To SLAM you need to raise your FC to 24 ppm and maintain it. It is best to lower pH to 7.2 prior as you cannot test pH at SLAM level FC.

It is unlikely to have a completed SLAM in 2 days.

If you keep adding the 8 or 9 ppm FC worth of bleach every day it may keep the algae from overwhelming your pool water.

But a SLAM is needed to eradicate it.

Thank you. To lower the pH, what measurements do I need to put in to the Pool Math calculator? I looks like TA, Borate and pH, but my kit cannot test for Borate?

Also, what is recommended for pH adjustment? Muriatic acid or dry acid?
 
Put 8.0 in the now column and put 7.2 in the target column. It will tell you how much muriatic acid to use. Make sure you enter the strength of your muriatic acid. With the pump running slowly pour the MA in front of a return jet.
 
Borates are not in your water unless you added them.

TA and pH is needed for an accurate calculation on how much muriatic acid to use to lower pH.

Dry acid is sodium bisulfate. It leaves sulfates in your water. If they build up they can destroy metal and concrete.
