Pool Security camera

Hello,

Does anyone use a security camera to monitor their pool? I was looking for something to help notify me if there was activity by my pool, such as a small child. Both my kids are in swim lessons and I have high locks on all doors that lead to pool as well as sensors to alarm me when doors are opened. Just curious if there is a camera for extra protection.

I do have a camera system yet to be installed. It is a regular home security DVR system that is configurable to notify/alert on motion detection. It is older so has low resolution cameras. Once set up, you tell it what area of the feed to monitor for motion so you can weed out noise like tree branches. My feeling was to install it and just let it record. I had no plans to actively monitor it but would be able to review feeds if there were an incident.
 
I have a nest cam on my pool from an upstairs window and it gives alerts to my phone when it detects movement. You can also review video if you'd like. I also have experience with the Ring Cam and it too gives alerts when motion is detected, and the sensitivity of the motion can be adjusted which is helpful because with the Nest cam I get alerts sometimes when the sun moves the pool into a less shady view.
 
This was mine yesterday. I get alerts on my phone. Had to turn them off yesterday as I got contrast notifications as the tradies were there. Not sure I would use it as a safety device though. You can get in pool alarms. They are dirt cheap and set off a screeching alarm when something over 2kg falls in. Do you have a fence?

I do have a fence but its around the yard not around the actual pool. I was hoping to find a outdoor camera that would simply detect motion and alert my phone if it was detected. I have heard that Ring makes a outdoor camera with this function. Thanks for the input.

I have the nest and my in laws have the ring camera, the alerts do come when there is motion but I would not recommend them as a primary source for pool safety. A variety of reasons could lead to them being unreliable -- if your power goes out, if the wifi goes out, if you are in an area where your phone does not have signal, sometimes it is delayed, etc. If a small child fell into the pool I would not be comfortable relying on my nest camera to tell me.

Consider a pool specific fence as well if you haven't already and have small children in the house.

Was just considering buying a couple of Nest Outdoor cameras. You can get two for $300 or $50. off.

They appear to be high quality/ day night cameras with free streaming, and two way voice. Just plug in 120v and
download the ap and you can be up and running. If you want recording there is a subscription. I just want free
streaming.

I have a nice fence but just want to be able to view the pool from time to time.. especially when we have guests or severe weather etc.
I would just mount on my pool house and point toward the pool area.
 
Mine are the reolink argus. They do everything I want and were only $95 AUD each from Amazon. 1080 definition. Two way voice. Can record to your phone or an mini as card. PIR to notify you of activity and it automatically takes a photo and sends it to you. Night vision. No cables - lithium battery (had ours a couple of months and battery still almost 100% and I’m using it constantly). Set up was so easy for a technophobe like me. Download the app and scan the code on the camera. Done. App is so easy to use and doesn’t crash or glitch. The only thing it doesn’t do is constant streaming to the cloud or hard drive. So happy with our purchase as it does everything we want, but for a great price, easy to use and doesn’t require a large bandwidth, which was our concern with more expensive models.
 
I've got a Nest Cam Outdoor setup in my front yard so we can see the front door, pool, and trampoline. Can even use it to keep an eye on the kids while they're playing. And if you want to watch a particular area you can set the zoom level on it and it will enhance the image's brightness and try to sharpen the newly zoomed in image. I had thought about the Arlo, but found out it only records when motion is detected, and I prefer to be able to watch any time regardless of motion. btw, Nest has a new cheaper subscription option: $5 for 5 days of recordings for first camera, and $3 more for each extra camera you add. And if you pay for it on a yearly basis, you buy 10 months and get 2 months free.

EDIT: To clarify before anyone asks, no our kids are not allowed to swim unless a parent is out there with them. By "keep an eye on the kids", I mean on the trampoline, or riding the 4 wheel/car around the yard, etc.

Same reason we didn’t go with the arlo. Wanted to be able to live stream... particularly to watch the tradesmen work on the pool while I’m at work!

I've only had Nest myself, but I have friends that have other brands, and the number of times the "motion" detection hasn't gone off is enough for me to never get a motion detection only camera.
 
I guess I’m the old fashion one here. We still use a dvr with a hard drive and my cameras run through that for live view and recording. The dvr has access to the wan for free through a dns free service. I view anywhere in the dvr app or computer. I use everfocus dvr with speco technology cameras. Right now I’m us 1080p tvi cameras. They r 89 dollars each and have night mode and a 2.8 mm to 12mm range. I can zoom up to 300 feet away with detail still. Their range is great. 3 year warranty too which is awesome I feel.
