Small Pool Build - Brisbane, Australia [emoji1037]

Last official watering day today. Two mandated weeks is up. I think I'll keep going though as I will feel like I'm neglecting my baby if I let it dry up. Taylor speedstir arrived! Hubby's levelling off the equipment area. That's about it for progress. I think plumbing and equipment install is next, then electrics and paving, then fencing. Could be up to another fortnight before any of that starts.

Ordering mine any day now from CCL. They're located in the same city though, so shouldn't take too long to get to me. I ordered the speedstir from Amazon a while ago and it arrived a week early. Today is our first day without rain in ages. I was still having to water though as the heat did see the top half dry out fairly quickly in between downpours. The yard is a quagmire. You'll have to add a photo of your almost full pool! We were siphoning ours continuously but it still filled about a quarter of the way. That must be a huge amount of rain you've had in total?!

Well, today marks 28 days since concrete. Work was meant to continue tomorrow but due to delays on other jobs due to near non stop rain, we’ve been pushed back a week. So, next Thursday we have plumbing. Either Friday or Monday waterline tiles go on. It’s great to have dates. I have now been able to schedule our terminate barrier to be renewed on Monday, so timing works well. Another huge expense. The eight years since our last barrier was done went way too quickly. Figured since our backyard and concrete path is already damaged, we may as well do it now. I was a bit taken off guard when I was asked for the product code for our waterline tiles. I had thought of looking at other options, but oh well. I hadn’t given it too much thought since November. Now I’m panicking that I won’t like them. So, after the longest month, we’ll have some action again next week.

Wow has it been that long already! Too bad about the date being pushed back but it is what it is and at least they told you and had a very valid reason. Don't like it but.............LOL

Yeah that was a classic thread for sure. Her and I did her first water test over the phone. It was fun because her, at the time, 3 yr old kept slipping away from the older kids to find her LOL. I could hear him coming down the hallway with the others in pursuit! We laughed as much as did the testing!

That sound like a riot Kim! You were such a great support during her build, as you are in all builds. Oh, I read somewhere that you’re getting a robot! So exciting!

Umm, the month has dragged on for me. It seems like we’ve been living with an abandoned concrete shell in our yard for eternity! A little disappointed about the delay, but was kind of expecting it given the weather. Just hoping that things start moving next week as planned.

You certainly are and it looks amazing! We could have been neck and neck almost if we weren’t delayed. Our coping and paving will be linen (natural) tumbled travertine. Our waterline line tile is a 23mmx48mm ceramic mosaic in a similar neutral colour to the travertine. Waterline tiles seem to be a relatively new thing here. Most pools until a decade ago were built without and it was interesting when we were getting quotes to hear some pool builders included them and thought they were a necessity, while others thought they weren’t and had them as an optional extra. Our pb is old school so it was an on cost that we were told wasn’t necessary if we looked after our pool. Not much choice really here compared to what you have. We want neutral and understated, but I’m worried that the whole look will be too washed out.

But Liz you said no bling................Are you going to let me have some bling? Bling can be a pretty, bright BLUE!

Now all kidding aside. Most people second guess their choices. There is a reason you picked what you picked. I say stick with it! (Unless I can have my blue )

I like it! Definitely a nice compliment to the boulders throughout the yard to pull out the gray and tans. Wish you the best in your build!

Cheers!

Thank you! Not a single person we’ve shown does, which really makes us second guess our choices. My husband and I both agree and I guess it’s us who has to live with it. As you know though, it’s so hard to tell until it’s done.

Exciting, getting closer!!

Just to give you some time to consider it, you can extend the life of your plaster with a good/great startup, but if you want to preserve warranty, you may have to do what the PB says, or be prepared to fake it behind his back. Here's some reading, not to push you into it, but just so you know the full picture on plaster start-up.

Pool School - Start-up New Plaster
A Bicarb Start-up guide for TFP members
The Bicarb Start-up and Why it Works

Like most things "pool", you're likely to hear that anyone on the internet is full of crud, and they've been doing it for years, yada yada. That said, some members here have had success by providing the info to their PB and talking it over.

At the very least, find the startup directions for the product you're using, because some PBs really push the envelope on getting in and out.

And no matter what they or you do after, if the plaster is well applied, you'll get many years out of it. To put it in perspective, if plaster is well applied in the first place, you're likely to get 10-15 years out of it (maybe more / maybe less) even if they do the worst startup. It might not be as smooth as the best startup, but still totally fine for swimming and playing. With the best startup, you can add 3 to 5 years to it's life, and with good water chemistry after, a few more years and it will remain as smooth as new for a very long time. Can't predict with certainty, but hopefully that puts it into perspective.

Thanks! Kim has already linked me up with the start up types. Will talk with my pb about it but I have a feeling it will be an acid start. One of the reasons why I chose my pb was because he seems to have pretty consistent thoughts about pool chemistry as TFP. A lot of his documents discuss the relationship of FC and CYA. Have already told him once handed over I will be managing the pool not a pool shop and he was very happy with this. I still imagine they’ll be some debates when the time comes though.

Any feedback on grout colours? The tile shop kindly sent me a photo of the waterline tile (ours is the rectangular version) with grout swatches. The grouted sheet of tiles is the Manhattan, which I quite like the look of. Finding it hard to picture the other colours. Any advice? anyone have a preference?

I like the Manhattan as well. The only other real choose would be the silver gray. The others would not work at all in my opinion. Now go play with your stones. There are going to be some where you say "WHY did they send this ugly one?" or "WOW this one is really pretty" make sure the pretty ones go at eye catching places such as the far wall where your eyes will fall as you walk out the back door to the pool.
