We got our pool last year and had no problems. We also used the local pool store for testing - this year .... maybe due to the heat....anyway after finding this site I have purchased the Taylor k2006.
This A.M.
Fc- .5
cc- .5
ph- 7
TA- 140 ( was 150 day b4 yesterday 180 the day I received test kit- I added the acid in still water and slowly moved around then turned pump back on after about 4 hour
cya - 80
ive read SO much my heads swimming ---
first I need to bring down the ALK?

Hi Gleave - no, first you need to get some chlorine in that water. Your SWCG isn't going to be able to raise it from nearly 0 -- it will maintain it as long as you are running it at a high enough % with a long enough run time. I would add enough bleach to get you to your target of 6 FC (see the FC/CYA Chart link in my signature), and then test frequently to get a feel for how your SWCG is maintaining it. You may need to tweak its % or pump run time to get it to balance, and that balance may shift with weather conditions -- so it's always good to have some spare bleach lying around so that you can adjust if your FC falls below your minimum at 80 CYA.

I wouldn't worry about the TA unless you're having problems keeping your pH in check -- if it's rising quickly, you may want to consider lowering your TA, but I'd leave it otherwise.

No it's cloudy - has been also now just tested
fc - 2.5
cc- 0.5
ph 7
ta is 150
---

If your CYA is 80 as you posted earlier your FC is way too low. I would suggest an OCLT tonight. Right now, get enough chlorine in the water to get to FC of 8. This evening, after the sun is off the pool, test and dose to FC of 10. Leave the pump ON and the SWCG OFF over night. Before sun up, get a sample and test FC again. If you have a 1 ppm or greater drop in FC , you will need to SLAM.

Let us know .

Take care.

All the reading I wasn't sure I had to do cya again but I did it's at 100
im so unsure of myself -- so now should I drain some water first then maybe?
i sure appreciate the knowledge from you all!!!!

Also - patience plz.... my test last night was
if I did right
fc-27.5
cc- 1
ph-7
Ta-175

Have you added CYA or powdered chlorine that contains CYA since you last tested? The CYA test is +/- 10 ppm. I would suggest doing a dilute CYA test to see if are right at 100 or above. See Step 8 - Pool School - CYA

If you need to SLAM it is easier to do with a CYA of 30-50. But you can do it at higher CYA, just takes lots of bleach to start, lots of testing reagents (order now for FAS-DPD refills) and diligence. Depends on how much your water costs.

Re: Not sure

Those test results indicate algae knocking on your door. The CYA is too high and the FC much too low. You would find better results by doing the following:
1 - Exchange some pool water to lower CYA to at least 80.
2 - Perform a SLAM (link below in my sig). Also reference the Chlorine/CYA Chart (link below).

Let us know if you have any other questions.

So overnight you dropped from 27.5 to 2.5 FC? If so, you need to SLAM. Sooner the better. Water exchange will be up to you.

Take care.

Correction 2.75 not the 27.5

OK -- you cannot get a 2.75 FC test with a FAS-DPD test.

So -- follow my post #7. Also do the dilute CYA test.

Take care.

No I only used liquid bleach

Obviously I did something not right in that test then - did the 0.5/10ml (55)drops
anyway that's no longer anyway since it was only 5 drops this a.m.

If it took 55 drops last night that is 27.5 ppm.

Wow - that is some FC consumption! How cloudy is this pool? Do you have live algae on the walls and floor?

OK -- go back to the post I referenced and do the OCLT tonight.

I would suggest getting some refills for the FAS-DPD now. You can order them from TFTestkits.net.

You will be SLAMing at 36 ppm FC unless you drain some water.

Take care.

Lets step back a minute here.. That is some crazy FC demand for a pool that is just a bit cloudy.

Please let us know everything that has been added to the pool. Have you used any algaecides, clarifiers, or other pool $tore potions?

Last week I added some stabilizer hth brand through the sock - but it was cloudy then ... was going by advice ---not here

I first did the MA - around pool pump off stirred slightly and let sit to lower TA because my understanding was to lower that first
was that
