Lap Pool Renovation with Aquabright

Good to know.

(We're not yet ready for tile, but I will follow your lead when the time comes.)

Happy to help if I can! I feel like I've gotten a degree in glass tile over the past few months.

Hey - where's your "Under Construction" thread?? You need to do one!

Hi AmyJo,

Just curious, what did NPT provide for your first Waterproof coating? I spoke with my PB regarding what they will use [for my glass tile installation] and they said, whatever their NPT recommends, which is usually Laticrete Hydro Ban.

Hi Tony - good to hear from you! How are things going with your build?
I had contacted the three Primary Waterproofing manufacturers over the weekend that Oceanside Glasstile recommends and only Aquron wrote me back today and referred me to NPT. Therefore I'm purchasing Aquron CPSP, but NPT did not recommend it.

Laticrete Hydroban isn't even recommended by Laticrete for Primary Waterproofing for renovations - only entire pools. I didn't even bother to ask why, as Laticrete was absolutely no help at all. Oceanside does not recommend Hydroban for Primary Waterproofing either - only for Secondary Waterproofing in full coverage situations - i.e. pools completely covered in tile.

This is the link to Oceanside Glasstile's Pool and Water Feature Installation instructions. All of their tried and true material recommendations are listed. Keep in mind that these guys actually wrote the ASTM Glass Tile Standards - so I believe everything they say! They are also very experienced tilesetters.

The link would not open, but I'm happy to email you the PDF if you PM me your address. I also did screen shots of the basic installation and materials instructions to post here:

Hi AmyJo,

Things are at a standstill with my build. I'm only 18 days into my shell curing stage, so nothing can happen at this point. I needed to take a break from all things "pool". It should start back up in about 10 days, when my tile arrives. Thanks for the info on Waterproofing and the Link. It is very similar to the info I found on NPT's site. (It's in conjunction with Oceanside.)

According the my PB, the guys that do their tile follow NPT's recommendations, and know what to use. But I will still be watching them like a hawk and questioning everything.

edit: the original link did open for me, but thanks for posting the instructions in the thread.

Amy! Those are great diagrams and instructions you posted from Oceanside!!! You have earned at least an Honorary Degree in Glass Tile for Pools! Thank you for sharing all that you've learned. So many people will use your information and enjoy beautiful glass tile in their pools.

Now, I'm running outside to see if my glass tile has fallen off yet!!!

Suz

No doubt that concrete blocks were used for the bench and steps - ya think? [emoji12]

Please note my favorite thing so far - my pretty little new step at the top. We've waited an entire month for this little guy to cure.

Yay!!!! Amy's back in town!

I know you are so glad to see some progress again... What's a few leaves and little water when it means getting closer to the end, right?!!!

Ok, so I checked up on your diagrams. Next up will the the Mortar Bed Bond Coat and then the Mortar Bed? Do you know how long between the different coats and layers?

I'm hoping all these coats have beautiful and exotic dyes in them, so we have some interesting colors to look at while we must wait for the tile! ::epds:: I can hardly stand the wait, and my popcorn is getting low. I don't see how you do it!

Geeze, look at those blocks! Was this a DIY build?

You and I both know, that little step ("Amy's Step") will be more than worth the wait. Everytime you step on it, I bet you'll be smiling!

This is Norberto - the head of operations at our company, who was our head finisher (for furniture) for ten years or so. Look at how good he is with a sprayer! He is so excited to get to the actual tiling phase. He has a background as a tile setter in resorts in Mexico. We are lucky! He's a great guy - plus I've personally turned him into a monster of a perfectionist - to the point that he corrects me. [emoji23]

"Amy, you really think I'd forget the edges of the light niche?"

This could very well have been a DIY job. Unfortunately we know very little about the original installation of this pool. We never met the original owner who was a modern architect and builder. He died very suddenly and it turned out that his ex-girlfriend owned the house (a financial deal between them). She was on a certain home-swapping reality show a few years ago and was famous for crazy things she did to people's homes - and she "band-aided" the issues that this pool had. We believe she also had her painters paint this pool with house paint so it would look good. [emoji849] She turned out to be certifiable. Every time we turn around, a latent issue rears its ugly head. She didn't have a thing to do with the original build - only making it all look good temporarily before she sold the house. It never went on the market which was both good and bad. Good because there was no other buyer competition and bad because there was no inspection.

Thank you all for following our little renovation. It must be the sloooooooowest and most boringggggg on TFP!! [emoji12]

I'm quite disappointed in the Aquron appearance. I wanted to SEE something for a change! [emoji35]

I was afraid there weren't going to be fabulous dyes in those coatings. How disappointing. All that money, and you can't see a thing!!! Lol!!

Hi Norberto!! It's fun to see him go in the videos - so quick. What a skilled and experienced artist! I'm always in awe of the Norberto's of the world. You are fantastically lucky to have him. This really is exciting to know you have an artist doing your work. Thanks, Amy... :grrrr: You just made it harder for me to wait!

Suz :sun:

Hahaha Suz - I'm going CRAZY waiting! I'm also managing via text this afternoon. It's so blasted HOT here that I haven't even been outside. (Why go out if there is no water to jump into?????) The photos have been taken by our supervisor (hubby) and this is the sort of responses I'm getting to my concerns:

They know you well! LOVE IT!

So how does N know that he has covered a spot or not? Can it be seen at all? It is SO nice to meet and know people who care about their work! Please give him a :thumleft: for me!

Kim:kim:

Thanks Kim! He can see it, though it looks like nothing but water going on. He also reversed and did another coat ... and another .... and another .... we had so much in the five gallon bucket! Here is a photo of it all completed. I'm still annoyed it's not a color!
