New Fiberglass pool in Ohio

Be easy on me! I am a single mom and have no clue on pools :) I have been reading the forum so thank you for that! (well had a Kayak pool many years ago!) I actually had a builder and put a deposit down and wasn't getting the responses to my questions answered. So I switched contractors and now think I'm getting a better build with SWG that I wasn't getting before. Tell me what I'm missing or need to ask please! I'm building a Thursday Fiberglass 13.5X35.5 Lil Bob LX. It has a sun deck and splash pad and only 4'6 inches deep with seating areas on either side of the steps. I figure more useable space-do you use your deep ends?? I'm on the fence with another that is deeper. Pentair Super Flo VS Pump, Pentair Sand Filter with glass media (what are your thoughts on this?), Pentair SWG, Easy touch Automation-8, 3 Glo Brite LED's, Pentair 200,000 BTU Gas Heater. I am doing 2 pour brushed concrete-inner colored pour about 1 ft and then additional 4 ft around. I have 2 existing patios that are 30X20 and will also have 2 semicircle areas on the back side of pool 10X4 and right side of 7X4 in case I put a slide in. I looked but didn't see too much on it. I talked to everyone that used this builder and they are all really happy with the system and have really clear water, but I will look more into it. So you had it and it didn't work? What seemed to be the issue?

Welcome to TFP... A Great resource for all single mom's with no pool experience... :snorkle:

The EasyTouch is designed to use the IntelliFlo pump. It can not easily control the SuperFlo, which is the whole point of having automation.

The EasyTouch just tells the IntelliFlo what speed it wants and the pump goes to that speed. With the SuperFlo you have to manually tell the pump what 4 speeds you want and then the EasyTouch can only select one of those pre-set speeds. So, instead of having a variable speed pump, you end up getting a 4 speed pump. Plus, this kluged set up uses four of your EasyTouch's control relays. It just does not make sense to use the SuperFlo with automation.

You will love your SWCG.... Keep in mind even with a saltwater pool you still have to test your pool water on a regular basis so that you can keep your chemicals balanced. Suggest you get a personal test kit so that you can test your own pool water and stay out of the Pool $tore... I would recommend either the TF-100 or the Taylor K-2006C..

More folks than not report bad experiences with alternative media in sand filters. Sand filters are designed to use sand and sand always seems to work best and give the most consistent results. Many thousands of members have good experiences with using sand in their sand filters.

Jim, I will ask about that. I may have been mistaken as there were 2 different ones in my packet and it didn't specify on my bid.
I will also inquire more on sand. I'm not sure why builder is adamant on using glass. Of course I don't know any different and his total pricing is way cheaper than other bids using sand so didn't appear to be more of an expense.
 
Man do I miss those lot sizes back in Ohio!

Im sure I'm in the minority here but I couldn't imagine not having a deep end in a "swimming" pool. Ultimately you have to gauge how you would like to use your pool and I guess you could factor in things like kids wishes too. :)

If you are planning a slide in the future, download the spec sheet for one and ensure you have the deck and depth requirements. Don't forget to plumb for it as well.

Haha...but this weather here now is crazy! May even have snow flurries (seriously!)

The kids want the deep end, but visiting friend's pools, no one uses them and we are all crowded in this little 10X15 area..lol That is why I asked-the kids would probably rather play volleyball and basketball with the whole length available. What do you do in your deep end?? Diving board, cannon balls?..just curious!!

Yes! I have the slide figured out on that other side semicircle. May need it a bit bigger. Builder is plumbing for the slide. Holy cow those are pricey!

One other question. I think I'm only doing 2 LED lights..where would you place these??

We are pretty serious about making sure our kids can "tread water" and float for extended periods. It's good exercise for us and it's funny how the kids seem to follow suit. I was telling my wife how most of the people on here say the deep end is never used. We thought it was pretty funny as we always seem to chill there.

I guess it isn't the norm, but we learned from our last pool what we like.

As as far as light placement, the consensus on here is they face away from the house, spa or seating area to reduce glare.
 
On the lighting I figure 1 on the far end and was wondering are they angled or no? Can they be put into the seating ledge (obviously lower on the side) or better on the side closest to house right after the seating ledge? I just wanted the light to illuminate some on the tanning ledge area and not sure that the opposite end with reach it?

I have searched on here and just don't see the posts of people not liking them, but I just started on here so don't know! Thank you for your input!
 
Others will probably chime in about light placement that know more than I do. I would see what your builder recommends then visualize how shadows will fall and if there will be issues with glare. We don't use our lights often, because it doesn't get dark until bedtime :) :)
 
I'm all for a deep end. They're safer in my somewhat knowledgeable opinion, in the sense that people love to dive in or cannonball in, and when the pool is too shallow more injuries occur.

A good pool provides both shallow conversational area and room to actually swim in. The model you have chosen seems to be all seating and little room for swimming laps. Folks use floats, tubes and noodles to float on in the deep end too.

My biggest regret with my fiberglass pool is not getting a deeper pool. :(
