I'm new to this forum, but have been hunting around and talked to a couple of you already by email and phone. I appreciate everyone's willingness to help! This is my second pool I have built on my own, and hopefully learned from my mistakes 10-15 years ago. Surprisingly some of the subs are the same that I will be using! The ability to buy through SCP, and their help, is the single largest saver I think from the last time I did this.

Here is a picture of my plans and the starting of the dig. My plumbing is scheduled for next Friday to begin.

I made the decision to go ahead and build the pool last Friday, since then I was able to get my plans, engineering and permit in three days, and the dig started on Thursday (yesterday). I plan on keeping track of everything including costs to help others as I have ben helped. Some changes are made to plans, no heater but will stub out for solar. Two LED bubblers in the wet deck and salt system which isn't on the plans. This pool is nearly 18,000 gal., so you can gauge everything on that figure. No Spa, but I will have two variable speed pumps and a panel that can handle switching around my water features and potential solar heat. This is my last priamary residence I intend to buy, so hopefully this is the last pool I will build for myself. My brother is watching my pool, and I will probably help him build his after this.

Its actually a bit easier doing it yourself I think, only because you control the entire process. But the best bids are always based on cash...

A couple new pics... The dig is done :)






Plumbing is to start Friday. I have my bids for steel, electric and shotcrete. I do have a question... Shotcrete or Gunnite? One guy says shotcrete is better, the other says they are nearly identical other than how they are applied, but both end up at 4500 PSI and both have lifetime warranty...
 
Shotcrete is a generic term describing either a wet or dry mix process. It is many times incorrectly used to differentiate a wet mix process from a dry mix process. Gunite is a dry mix only process, meaning the Portland cement and aggregates are delivered to the nozzle dry, by compressed air where they are then mixed with water at the nozzle.

Differentiating which one is better is a fool's errand. Mix design and proper proportioning are the keys to a durable structure regardless of the delivery method.

Okay... well, then I will let the gunite/shotcrete guy decide.. its his warranty..
 
Update - plumbing comes tomorrow and will be done tomorrow. Steel on Monday and rough electrical on Tuesday. I am going to try and schedule my rough inspection for Weds. If all goes well, gunite/shotcrete (told him it was their choice since its a lifetime warranty) will be Friday or the next Monday, depending on their schedule. I guess I should probably mosey on down to NPT and pick out some tile and start talking to plasterers. I think I know what I'm going with on the plaster... Quartzscape tahoe blue (thanks Larry :)) in the reflections version (very jazzy).

My steel guy is pretty cool, he said he would add a bench for me, at no charge, under my sheer descents and reinforce extra to be sure absolutely no problems passing... again no extra charge.

Question:

Has anyone done an LED rope type light around the edge? My specs call for that and I like the idea, but not sure if its above water line or below. Guessing above under the coping.. do you like it? is it more trouble later down the line?
 
The LED rope lights aren't common at all on pool installs. They just don't seem to be a best practice for benefit vs longevity I suppose. Very common are LED lights in either the large, small or nicheless varieties with most being the cool color-changing versions. Having several can be awesome. I'd go with the options that the big boys (Hayward, Jandy, Pentair) sell and be more mainstream in that regard.

I have a pentair LED light... All my stuff is Pentair, one warranty, and I have heard nothing but good things. I'll probably kill the rope light idea... I have LED's on pool, bubblers and probably on sheer descents.. that's probably enough bling...lol
 
Plumbing started this morning and should be done. I'll post some more pics when I get home. I know that I love to see pics of other's pools for ideas, as well as stages. So I apologize for the number of pics, but better more than less...

I am doing in floor cleaning for my wet deck and steps, and LED Bubblers on the wet deck.. three sheer descents on the back wall. All Pentair System, two 3HP VS Pumps and 520 filter FYI.
My plumber is extreme easy to work with and we adjusted stuff to get what I wanted with his recommendations. He said if there is any issues, he will be right out and introduced me to guy that would actually making corrections, if any.

I'm trying a steel guy that no one listed, but both my excavator and one of the plumbing guys said he is awesome. He is reasonable and when I told him about some added bench ideas, he said no problem and no extra charge (I'll pay him a bit more anyway). Steel is set for Monday, Electric Tuesday and then inspection. I'll update with pics each phase.
