Last year I replaced the sand in our filter with Zeolite. I think I may have underfilled it a bit. We had a very small amount wash out over the summer. Fast forward to this year I am in the process of slamming our pool for algae. After backwashing each time I noticed there is more and more Zeolite washing out of the filter and the pool is taking a super long time to clear. Over a week into the SLAM prob at the 9 day mark. Is it possible that the under filled filter is washing the media out because it is under filled? I know it could be a broken lateral etc but really wanting to see if that could possibly be the problem.

Zeo comes from 4 mines. The size can vary. Zeo can break down. When you buy it, you don't know what you are getting. The result is zeo that is too small and will fill your pool with it. Occasionally you get a bad batch of zeo, which is softer than usual, and it is constantly getting crushed and thus continues to put dust into the pool until it is replaced.

I'm lucky, when I bought the house and was "pool stored" the guy said this is what to put in...what did I know, he at least knew to backwash, and apparently I got the big particle stuff. Since then, I've helped dozens of pools with Zeo problems.

I would recommend avoiding the zeo. I don't think there is a huge improvement with the Zeo over sand. I'd replace the zeo with Sand and inspect all the internal parts.

Thanks so much! Our filter is old. Probably 13-15 years ols but only operated a handful of those years. I have looked at replacements just in case. We have a Doheny 1.5 hp pump. I have been looking at replacements but how do I know what size will handle our pump? I have looked at a 16" and 19" both are within the gallons our pool holds.

If the filter isn’t leaking it’ll last much longer. You can just suck the zeo out with a shop vac and replace with normal sand.

Replaced media with sand yesterday. After 2 backwashes there is a good amount of sand that came out. Laterals looked good when checked. So something is prob broken in the head right? Is it worth it to just replace that part?

If you overfilled a bit it’s common for sand to be washed out during backwash, especially if the pump is priming at full speed. The amount should reduce down over time.

The filter called for 100 lbs and we put 100lbs of Mystic White II sand. And in the 2 backwashes we have lost probably 7 cups of sand? Still sound normal? I am at a loss.
