Why clean if dirty filters better?

Can someone "clear" this up for me? Ahem...is this mic on?

What is the advantage to deep cleaning a sand filter if a "dirty" filter filters better?

Is the primary purpose of a deep clean to break up the clumpiness in the sand, not necessarily to get the water to run clean?

A dirty sand filter filters better, to a point. That point is when the flow is restricted. That is how we came up with the 25% over clean pressure.

A deep clean is to break up any clumping, solve any channeling, and to float out any debris that is not leaving the sand during a backwash.
