When to turn on heat pump for season?

Cut solar blanket to irregular shape of our pool. It has worked wonders already in only a short time. Pool water temp at 74F today. We heated up to 85F for Mother's Day. Took heater running for approx. 24 hrs. Had very little impact in most recent electric bill.
At what point do you all turn on your heater for the season? And what target temp do you use? Rather than going ditch to ditch, wasn't sure whether I should now just set target to something like 80F with solar cover to maintain the base temp?
