When do you Replace vs Clean pool filters?

I've got a Hayward SwimClear pool filter, not sure which model but maybe C4030? It's got four filter cartiridges inside of it.

I've had the pool in operation for about 4 years in Austin, TX, and I dutifully clean the filters about every 6-8 months. Basically I do it in the late spring and do it again before it gets cold in the late fall.

What I'm trying to figure out is when do you decide to replace vs just clean the filter cartridges? I can usually get them pretty clear using a wide angle head on my power washer from a safe distance, working out the hard gook (sticks, seeds, etc) with a chopstick. However, the fabric straps are largely going on all of them... not that they seem to really need them, but most of them are split in at least 1-2 spots as they wrap around.

Is there a recommended timeframe folks have for when you replace them regardless of how clean you can get them? Obviously there's stuff and stains I can't see or get to in the very inside of the folds...

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Rick

Rick,

Have the same set-up as you..C4030

If the integrity of the individual filtering pleats are in good shape, that is one major hurdle. If the blue plastic ends are also in good shape [no major splits or other], then that is the other. Also, if you take a flashlight and look into the center and the core is still clean and white, the filters are still doing their job. cleaning them twice per year can make them last longer, as long as you don't degrade the material w a power washer...I just bought my second set after 3.5 yrs and plan on replacing the current ones, but cleaning them right after so I can plug and play,,,good luck

Note, if you have never used hair nets in your skimmer baskets, then definitely use them - will immensely cut down on your cleaning

Amen to the skimmer socks! ^^ I have a paint strainer net in my skimmer that helps a lot. I think you're on the right cleaning schedule for a 4x filter. Shop on-line in advance when you can. There are other brands that sell compatible cartridge filters that may save you some $$ as well. :) I do the same though, even if the bands are coming off, as long as the pleated paper is still intact and doing its job, I run those filters into the ground. I'm a bit of a penny pincher. :)
