What’s this thing??

Found this in my parents skimmer. Pool was built in the 70’s. Looks like a 70’s version of a UFO diverter? Any ideas what it is and if it’s a diverter, how to adjust. No issues with the pool. It’s skimming but not sure if the drains are restricted or not. Seems they would be.

Does it have a wing nut on the top? Do they have a main drain in the floor of the pool?

There is a main drain but not a wing nut. Looks like a metal loop on top as if you hook something into it to move it. No longer at my parents to check it out more.

I'm wondering if it is some sort of plug, like maybe they had trouble with the skimmer line leaking. Did you ask your parents if they knew what it was?

Yeah. They have no idea. Maybe your right cause it does look like a plug.

I think you may be right. Of course, we are in Southern California where it never freezes. Probably just leave it in. Don’t need the drain anyway and maybe it was put there due to a leak in the drain line. Thanks again

Why do you think that it goes to the main drain?

Isn't it the skimmer suction hole?

The area forms a "T" just like a fitting for pvc. Right above where the thingy is, is an opening (which you can't see in the picture) which is the suction line for the skimmer

Sorry I am no longer at my parents so I don’t have any additional pictures. The pic I added is deceiving. The top of the plug is about 1 1/2” below the lip of the opening. In the edited picture, I added a red line that indicates that opening for the suction line. The opening is just above the plug.
BTW, I had a dream my parents pool was drained and I pulled that plug out and sewage came out of the floor drain. Maybe it’s a sign.
