I occasionally have to disconnect the unions in my pool plumbing - usually to replace the salt cell. To do this I use large channel locks. The problem is that this method damages the outer wring of the unions. What is the best way to undo these without chewing up the unions too badly?

The best way to prevent damaging them when removing is not to over-tighten them when tightening.

Don't use channel-locks, use a strap wrench to loosen. When tightening, only hand tight. Steap wrench won't damage them at all.

And lube the o-rings before installation.
