What pump for my setup?

My old hayward super pump motor just bit the dust, so I'm looking at replacement options. I had planned on going with a calimar 3hp but of course no one has them in stock. If I had to pick a big name brand, what would be a decent option? I don't have any automation, as its a basic setup. just a pool timer, pump, salt system and polaris booster pump. no fountains, etc. Everyone seems to mention the intelliflo, but that one has the autmation built in that I dont need. I just want something that has on-board scheduling so i don't over pay for more than what i need. Pool is 30000 gallons. thank you!

I haven't done much looking at the new IntellifFlo pumps, but you can get the pump without the relays and app control. Lots of great value in the Calimar pump though. If you call them, they should be able to give you an estimate of when the next shipment will arrive at the port.

@1poolman1 may be able to give you some options for a replacement motor if your wet end is still in good shape.

What horsepower Super Pump do you have? A Nidec Neptune NPTT XXX (C-face) motor will turn your pump into a VSP with full control of run times and speeds on the motor control. Add a GOKIT 3 for all the other items needed to replace the motor and your good as long as the wet end is still good.

It's a 1hp motor. I think the wet end is fine. When I tried to turn the pump on, there was some sparks and a little smoke from the motor. I immediately shut it off. Is there any advantage to newer pumps vs going with the Nidec?

I've been reading about the Pentairs and it looks like the Intelliflo is setup for automation and the Superflos are just a VS pump with the timer/controller? Also, while my pump is down, does anyone have any advice on what to do to limp my pool along? Just add liquid chlorine in the meantime?

Both can be controlled via on-board panel or via automation. The IntelliFlo models generally have higher capacity/power than the SuperFlo line.

Yes. Use your brush or net and mix well. If you have a submersible pump set it up in the pool to circulate water. Use a robot if you have one.

The advantage of going to a new pump is that, if you get a new Variable-speed Super Pump, everything is new. It will be the same total horsepower. If the wet end is good, the motor is a good option.
If you go to a larger VSP, like a Hayward Tri-Star 2.7, or a Waterway Power Defender 270, you will get: a.) a high-head pump (your Super Pump is a medium-head pump) b.) a pump that can be run at lower RPM to save the most in energy cost to filter the pool.
For your simple pool, I would recommend the Waterway if you were my customer. Very solid pump with a less-expensive to replace motor if and when it or the drive goes bad. It uses the Nidec Neptune motor. I've installed about 10 with zero issues or call backs since they changed from the no-longer made Century V-Green 2.7. Easy to program. The Hayward is good, too, and if the motor or drive goes bad the Nidec motor can be installed.
My business has always been centered on repairs and I look to what will it cost in the future, and how hard will it be to repair.
Then, you can't go wrong with a Pentair Intelliflow either.

Thanks for the explanation. I will take a close look at the Waterway; I'd never heard of them before. I really do like what you explained about the larger pumps, which is primarily why I was looking at the Calimar, but they're not in stock. I also ran across a post on TFP where someone's Calimar died and there was zero support, so that is a concern as well. In the end, I may end up picking between the Tristar 950 since I have all Hayward equipment, or the Intelliflo3 which is supposed to be bulletproof, but overkill for my needs.

TriStar 950 is the updated version of the EcoStar, Hayward's first VSP. Its the pump I have and, while they did have issues with the drives when I got mine 14+ years ago, I've had none. Same pump with a slightly different and improved motor and drive.
