What mode for vacuuming?

Hi all, I want to drain my pool 1/2 way and fill with water again. On my sand filter I have four modes. Filter, backwash, winter and rinse. What should I set it to drain the pool? Also is the algae/green water on the surface or all of the water?is it illegal to drain water to street/sewer?Thank you

You won't be able to do it lower than the skimmer with the pump. You'll just start sucking air unless you have a main drain and a valve to isolate it.

Many people use the pool vacuum to siphon. Set the head in and slowly feed the hose vertically to force out all the air. Then cap it with your hand and haul it out and over and below water level and you'll have a high-volume siphon going. If you secure the open end somehow so it doesn't get pulled in, you can then vacuum with it. You might be able to secure the backwash hose over the vacuum hose cuff and gain some distance.

Different localities have different rules about discharges. Some say no chlorine, others are sensitive about salt. You're on your own, there. You need to find out the law where you live.

No mode that says waste unfortunately. I know some even same circulate which would be nice because it skips everything and just goes in and directly out. I was thinking about taking my incoming hose off fitting on outside of pool and set something up so hose stays on bottom of pool but off liner and put valve on either backwash or rinse and turn on pump.where I have my water going to is about 120' away from pump. If you guys don't hear from me I'll probably be in jail for discharging water into sewer haha. Technically all it is is water as I haven't added any chemicals. wish me luck! Thanks

You want to choose 'waste' to drain for your purpose, if available. I've never heard of a filter than didn't have that. Once you drain to the bottom of the skimmer (the water intake in your pool), you'll have to just use the old fashioned siphon method, assuming that you have an above ground pool. (I use the same hose that I use for vacuuming for the siphon) or a submersible water pump. You can use a garden hose to do the old fashioned siphon, but it will take much longer than using the aforementioned hose. If you have an in-ground pool, a water pump will be your only option.

As far as draining waste, you'll have to check with your local ordinates.

Which filter do you have? The next best draining option with no 'waste' selection would be rinse.
