What is the ideal water level?

Is the ideal water level 1/2 way up the skimmer face?

I was filling it just below the skimmer overflow but not sure if that is right.

Not all skimmers tuck an overflow tube inside, so obviously for you you should not fill up as far as that overflow. But for most folks the water level is to the half point or no more than 3/4 high to insure you are getting proper skimming action.

In theory, the bottom of the over flow should be when the water is about half way up the tile line.

In most pools the tile line is about 6".. So the middle of the tile, is also about the middle of the mouth of the skimmer.

It is not absolutely critical..

The higher the water is at the mouth of the skimmer, the less skimmer action there is..
The lower the water is at the mouth of the skimmer, the more skimmer action there is. (But your run the risk of going too low..)

So, half way up the tile line is a good compromise.
