We were just comparing our bids to a friend's and he has an air blower in his spa but we don't and both were drawn up by the same person. We don't know if we want one or need one.

The job of the air blower is to blow air into the spa. :p

But, seriously, some jets work well without a blower and some work better with a blower. Withouit a blower, the venturi tube provides the air.

In addition, you can have air holes in the seat and floor for more action.

A lot depends on how much action you like.

In our spa we have no bubbles at all until we turn on the blower. One thing that I notice with ours is that we have too many bubbles, I am wondering if I can add a motor controller to the blower motor to cut it down to about half of what we are getting right now. We do enjoy the bubbles, but it seems like it should be adjustable with the automation.

So does the blower make the jets or just extra bubbles? If we don’t have a blower will we not have jets?
The blower just injects air into the system. Some spas don't need the blower and the Venturi effect of the nozzles pulls the air from an air pipe located close to the spa. I do not have a blower on my spa. My neighbor does. See if your friend has more jets, that would require a blower. Ask you pool builder to show you how they work. Here is a link to the wiki article.

The blower just injects air into the jets. You will have a separate motor for the jets. I have a 2hp motor for the jets and a standalone blower. I rarely use the blower as it makes it very turbulent in the spa and it splashes more. It is also significantly louder. If my blower died I wouldn't replace it.
