What is all this? - question about valves and shutting off water

Hi All, I'm planning on draining my pool so that I can wash it out. I need to shut the water off to the pool, but I can't figure out how to do that without shutting off the water to the house, which I don't want to do. I see two (and only two!) valves on the pool plumbing, but I don't know what they do. Would someone explain to me what those two valves (the two black fittings around the pipes near the lower part of image--one valve has no handle, but a square knob) do, as well as how I might shut off the water to the pool? Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!
None of those valves will stop the water going to your autofill.
There should be a line somewhere that feeds your autofill. I imagine it is old enough that it does not have a back flow preventer. Look for something near a hose bib, irrigation lines, etc.

Why do you need to 'wash out' your pool? Do you have water chemistry results from your own test kit?
Can you fill out your signature? Pool type, volume, equipment, etc. Click on your Member name at the upper right of this page and go to Signature.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.
