I have had foam under my pools for at least 8 years now. Will not be without it.
The foam protects the bottom, makes it feel nicer, looks better, easier to vacuum and insulates the pool from the cold ground.
Make sure to tape the seams together with a good quality tape (I used Gorilla tape) and put a good quality tarp over the top.
My current foam is 5 years old and is till holding up fine. The only drawback is the cost.
What exact foam brand name did you use and type? And what thickness? Thanks

Hi. You're looking for XPS, not EPS. Extruded foam holds up better and doesn't hold water. I've heard different opinions on thickness, ranging from 1/2 an inch to 2 inches. I would probably go a 1 inch or more. They can be pink or blue, or occasionally green, depending on your hardware store. It's pretty much all the same. I have seen people use the white and foil faced foam, but to my knowledge, that's 15psi. You'd probably be better served with 25 psi rated stuff, but I'm not a pro. I personally like it, but it's new, so I can't say if I did a good enough job, lol. Good luck, and don't forget the tape!

I got 3/4 inch 6x4 rubber horse mats under my 12x24. They can't get dented, nothing can ever get through them, and they feel great beneath the feet. Biggest problem with them? Moving them. They are 100 pounds of akward giant-sized dead weight each. But at $50 each I felt it was reasonable and minimal price upgrade compared to thicker extruded polystyrene sheet costs around here. But moving and placing those horse mats is seriously such an exhausting chore I am compelled to complain about it twice in one post :)
