What did you do to your pool today?

Why can't we have a digital CYA test or changing color drop test? I hate that test of all tests because I'm never sure of it.

You can get CYA turbidity meters.

About a grand or two for the meter, plus a couple of hundred for the calibrations you have to run on it on a regular basis.

Dang it - I thought I had everything dialed in right after opening. Got the cover off, FC up to SLAM level, vacuumed everything up and had the water crystal clear. Passed OCLT, so I slowly brought CYA up, and I think this is where things went sideways. When I first tested, it was below 30, confirmed by test at Leslie’s. (Yes, I know - but this store’s tests are always in line with my own.) Added 2 bottles of Instant Conditioner, which brought CYA to 40, again confirmed by Leslie’s. Purchased 2 more bottles, but only added 1. Imagine my surprise when my CYA tested at 80-90. I don’t have any idea how it jumped so high. I waited a full week after I added the first 2 bottles to test. Even though I was maintaining FC at 8-9, I’m thinking I had the CYA too high. Then storms rolled in, knocking lots of debris into the pool, plus I skipped several days before testing again. Next test, FC had dropped to 3.5, so I knew I had an issue. I still haven’t been able to get FC up to SLAM level based on my CYA level. I guess the bleach I was adding was weak. Just added 3 gallons of 10% LC, so hopefully that does the trick. Got everything vacuumed up (again) and water is clear, but still failed the OCLT this morning. Hopefully, I get it knocked out in a couple of days, but more rain is on the way, which could complicate things.

That sucks to hear, hope all goes well! You just don't want a swamp!

It's in my PoolMath logs. It has been 60 ppm for the last month or so. I usually keep it at 70.
They weren’t popping up - but they are now! Glitch in the matrix I suppose ☺️
Just thinking it was probably a little low with that loss - the uv has really turned on!

I just cleaned my filter. Arms are a little itchy from the fiberglass. I always wear gloves but it is what it is. Maybe I shouldn’t hug it when putting the belt back on. 🥰 It’s kind of unavoidable somehow. Anyway, no biggie and glad it’s taken care of!

I caught my pool draining out through my overflow pipe yesterday, while viewing my crazy pool cam mirror (not so crazy now)!! So today I will be tracking down the auto-leveler failure that caused this (stupid toilet tank auto-filler valve, no doubt). I could have easily missed this, until the water bill arrived, if not for "crazy cam."

(I've posted this before, but I can't help showing it off!)

I just moved this mirror, for the third time, trying to find the perfect angle. And then last week I planted a whole row of new shrubs which are quickly going to grow into its way. So I'll have to move the mirror yet again, soon. Errrrr. Shrubs are going to look great, though, and will hide that ugly drainage ditch, so worth it.

You sound like my wife there, when I say one of the million things she's planting each day has too move for practical reasons. The reply always is: "But it looks so pretty...".

Well, it does! (Or will when they get out of shock and their flowers come back.)

I used a plant that is already working in another part of my yard, so I have some confidence they'll take. Someday they'll look like this. I don't trim these, I don't dead-head the flowers. They stay the size I want and always seem to have flowers on them. My kind of garden plant.

After a couple of weeks of heavy rain every day, the pool FINALLY passed the OCLT. I suspect all was well several days ago, but with overnight rains, I couldn’t perform a valid test. Spent a small fortune keeping FC at SLAM level. Nice and sunny today and it will be hot! Will probably get the chiller ready, even though more rain is on the way this weekend. A perfect day for hitting golf balls into the net, cooling off in sparkling water, and grilling some steaks.

The pool is finally open-open.

This year was a bit of a chore, since I put in a new pool last October and promptly closed it. So instead of a normal take the cover off, add water, attach the filter, add chemicals, and throw in the stairs. Then there is the whole uncover the deck furniture, put the screens in the gazebo, and drag out the carpets for the deck. That is for a normal opening. This year had some additional steps.

- Move the electric since the filter is now 20' from where it used to be
- Hard plumb the filter again since it is now in a new place
- Since the new pool is higher than the old pool and the uprights are in slightly different spots I had to create some sort of edging to cover gap that was now there (the dark brown boards in the pictures)
- Since the new pool is higher than the old pool I had to basically rebuild the step/support looking thing that I had previously built to hold the pool stairs.

Last night I finished up rebuilding the stair support and put the stairs into the pool. It is finally full open. (But I cannot find my pool thermometers for some reason)

Pool has been open since May 25, the earliest ever and remarkably clean and clear. So yesterday, since it was showery, windy and cold, all I did was test, add some liquid chlorine and run an extra pump cycle to skim off hundreds of tiny male pinecones. The pine pollen season is ending, I wiped off the inch high yellow pollen at the waterline a few days ago ( husband's car washing pole with the microfiber dreds pad did a great job 🥰). Did a lot of grumping at all those male pine cones. Especially after glaring at the 3 huge pine trees 75 ft up wind of the pool...

It's mulberry season here. I like to glare at the two big mulberry trees I have, while washing bright purple bird poop off of my pool ledge.

Ooooo... I'll take the pine pollen, tiny male and big female cones and even the pine needles any day over mulberries. While they taste marvelous, mulberry bird poop is a big NO. For pools and cars!
