Folks, let's congratulate @bmoreswim (Post #19) for being voted as this month's TFP (Landscaping) Pool of the Month. @bmoreswim , you have to tell us more about your outstanding yard.

Many thanks to all who participated. All of the photos submitted were enjoyable to see on the forum. Check back and we'll do this again next month.

As is the case for many folks, our landscaping is a labor of love. If I liked to golf, my backyard would not look like this - it's too time consuming. But for me, I'm always wandering around doing something which helps me stay on top of it. We were in our house for 13 years before we decided to build a pool, but my original master plan for the backyard had a large circular quasi-Victorian garden surrounding a blue spruce tree, and all I had done to that point was planted the central blue spruce on 1/1/2000 (our Christmas tree). So there wasn't much to undo from that perspective.

Once I knew that the back side of the pool would be shaped like a sphere, it set my plan in motion. Semi-circular design with a large enough height difference from front to rear to counteract the large elevation change. By and large the downhill portion hasn't changed much over the years except to mature and self-seeding of the coneflowers amongst the liriope from their original position just behind it. The hibiscus were the late season surprise for their flowering longevity, until first frost. The other beds around the pool have had two, and one has had three, incarnations as things didn't evolve as I wanted or things didn't take to their local environments. And that's been the real fun of it - ending up with something where the elements are well suited to their spaces. Just don't tell the people looking to buy our house someday how much work it is to maintain, because it may not be their labor of love.

Here's one more view of the property as a whole.

@bmoreswim You have a beautiful piece of property there and you have done it proud. It would be ideal for my wife and I as we are doing the same on a smaller scale with no elevations, unfortunately. We started with just a pool and wall to wall lawn that I insisted on front and back that was the backdrop for our wedding reception in 2002. We added some hibiscus and llantana with a couple hibiscus getting replanted in different locations over the years. We started with 5 Ficus trees of which only one survived (we used to get hard freezes back in the '00s) and is now a 22 year specimen tree in the front yard. I have to trim it back each fall so that my suspended Santa and reindeer can still be seen up over the front yard. Our backyard now has two Orchid trees (one Hong Kong and one Purple that bloom multiple times per year slong with a firecracker Myrtle. A few years ago we tired of looking at our sprinkler-stained block wall so we built out planters where the grass met the wall (coincided with my running a replacement 240v line around the edge to my pump) and moved the sprinklers in 3' from the wall. We painted the walls and filled the planters and some new tree wells with lots of flowers and flowering shrubs, trying to get as much color as possible. We still have the best yard of all our family for the grandkids to play and run around in and we are quite proud of it.

Thank you. That sounds like a nice evolution to where you are today. Glad you have your Christmas decorations as a priority!

Congratulations bmoreswim!!! Enjoy not just your pool and landscape but the time you spend with people around you.
Thanks. Yeah, that’s been the real highlight of the pool - more time spent with family.

Beautiful yard, nice work. After looking at the aerial and ground views something did catch my attention.
Is that fence at least 4' high or does MD not have the same requirement as we have here in NJ ? (I didn't see another fence surrounding the entire yard).
