Waterfall question

I bought a house with a pool that has a moss rock water fall (not the pool in the profile pic...that's old pool). The water fall has two areas where the water spills down into a recessed area, that then fills up and then spills over into pool. Well, these recessed areas do nothing but collect dirt, sand, leaves and when not running water fall all the time the water gets all slimy and nasty. So when you do want to run the pool it will just then dump all that grossness into the clean pool.

My question is are the recessed areas that fill up then spill over necessary at all?? Can I fill those in with concrete so that I don't have a sunken area to collect dirt and grime and get nasty water? What is the purpose of those? Thanks for any info. I love the water fall, but want it to stay clean!

I bet they ran the waterfall all the time or at least they thought that is what they were going to do :)

Are you running the waterfall 1 or 2 times a day, that would keep it clean

Fill in the bowls. Those bowls are breeding grounds for algae.

Even if you run the waterfall 1 to 2 times a day it will not necessarily get all of the stagnant water out of the bottom of the bowls and keep the bowls algae free.

We have seen folks arrive here chasing constant algae problems in their pool that were tracked back to them having your kind of waterfall setup. Get rid of all places with standing water.
