Can I use water softener salt for my pool? 40 pounds of water softener salt is $6 and 40 pounds of pool salt is $25. I am replacing my liner and I need 15 bags.

Softener salt will have more “dirt” in it than pool salt. Be aware that you’ll likely see accumulated solids as the salt dissolves. Do not allow the salt to sit in one spot as it is possible for the dirt to cause stains. Gently move it around with a brush and manually vacuum after it’s mostly dissolved.

Do not run your chlorinator for at least 24-36 hours. Salt water is more dense than fresh water and it takes time for the saltwater to mix and homogenize, especially if the pool has a deep end hopper. You’ll want to mix the water as thoroughly as you can to avoid sending highly concentrated brine into the electrolytic cell.

How about Morton Pool Salt? It costs normally 8.5 dollar
That is usually fine, but some folks last year reported staining after using it.

It is hard to say what the quality will be from batch to batch and year to year. Some of the major brands in the big box stores rely on their brand and price rather than their quality.

This and the fact that most “brand name” salts simply license their name to a salt manufacturer and the manufacturer can procure salt from lots of different raw material suppliers. So there’s really nothing magical about a particular brand of salt. The brand simply specifies the use for the salt, some particular product specs, and the packaging type. Then the commercial manufacturer supplies the product to the wholesale distribution channel and off it goes to retail outlets and customers.

Typically standard softener salt is your best bet. You might get some dirt in the pool afterwards but that’s usually easy to clean up. If a pool owner were simply topping off their salt levels with a bag or two, then you can splurge for the faster dissolving “pool salt”.

Also, did you price any of this out with a local pool store? They usually sell individual bags for a steep markup but often will give you a price break if you’re buying in larger “startup” quantities. Might be worth a phone call to ask and see if you can get that $25/bag price down a bit.

I buy Aquasalt from my local pool store for about $14/bag. Makes it not worth the trip to save more, dissolves quickly, and never had a problem with impurities …

Do not use Clorox pool salt at any price. It is usually the cheap one for a reason.
OMG after clicking through some of the links you provided (specifically this one: Investigation: Clorox Selling Pool Salt Made From Fracking Wastewater) in your previous comment I might be sick, as I recently added 240lbs of Clorox salt to the pool. I noticed yellow stains, but I'm not as concerned about the stains as I am some of the other things. Wondering if I should be draining and diluting now as I may have RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL in the pool my kids swim in. UGH. I'm thoroughly disgusted. Off to research more on this.

Your pool is safe to swim in. The salt does not cause any health hazards.

Its bad effects are all cosmetic.

So you doubt the claims made on that site/podcast?
I believe about 30% of what I read on the Internet or hear on podcasts except for what is on TFP which is more like 80% accurate. Much is click bait.
