I recently adjusted my auto fill level raising the water level above the top of the skimmer weir. Around the same time, surface skimming essentially stopped. Is this an expected result? The top of the weir is under water, so surface debris aren't sucked into skimmer?

Correct. The water level should be mid way of the skimmer throat. Raising it higher will eliminate skimming action.

The lower the water, the better the skimming.. The higher the water the less skimming action you get.
If you run too low, it is easy to run out of water, so the middle to the skimmer's mouth is a good compromise.

Thank you for the validation. The reason why I raised the autofill was it is noisy due to the spout being just outside the water.
Going to have to try to find the sweet spot where autofill and skimmer are happy.
