Water heater

We had a water heater installed recently. There is no by pass and the one pipe is just hanging there. It's this normal?

That PVC pipe from the filter to the heater should be fine. Certainly more than one way that could've been routed, but it should be okay. If you were really worried about the pressure exerted on either end, you could take some scrap PVC and make a vertical leg support close to the corner elbow, going from the ground up to the bottom of the pipe.

IMO that is a fairly sloppy job. Functional, but sloppy. It looks like an amateur DIY job. One pipe has a union, but not the other. One pipe hanging in the air, the other on the ground. Sloppy primer. What is up with that heater location? Was this a "friend" that "knows about plumbing" that did it?
