I am not sure if it is bad thing or not, but we have a VS900 Hayward for our water features. I do like that I can adjust the water features with the variable speed. We have enough pump power to run the VS at 15-1600 RPM

A variable speed pump is not a bad choice as long as you don't need to run it at full speed.
I recommend a maximum of 2,750 rpm for a variable speed pump on a water feature.
Most people like to be able to adjust the flow to get the exact flow they want.

We like it for that and because we do not always want the bubbler and the sheer descent waterfalls all going. If I am only running the bubbler the flow rate needs to be lower or it will shoot 5 feet in the air, lol
