VS pumps are not cheap. How much money per season would I save if I make the extra investment on one of these? I have a 1.5HP Hayward Super pump now that I run about 6 hours a day.
If all you have is a pool a pump and a filter and you don't have any heaters or automation you don't need a VS pump.
A 2-speed pump will get you basically the same electrical savings for less cost.
As for how much will it save. A 2-speed pump when running on low will use about 1/8th the power it uses on full speed. A VS pump if run at low rpm will use about 1/10th the power of you current single speed.
My pump runs about 10hrs a day and cost about $25 dollars a month in electricity. That's mainly because it runs at a higher rpm to run my solar panels. Before I went to solar heaters the pump was about $10 a month for the same run schedule. I pay about $0.17 per kW/hr for electricity.
Thanks CJadamec, that information is very helpful. How do you pay so little in electricity? My KW charge is 12cents. Also, you mentioned solar heaters? Haven't heard of this yet. Are you referring to solar panels that will heat your pool? I have a single speed pump thats 1.5HP. How many hours a day would you recommend to run it? Pool stays fairly clean some leaves and insects but nothing to heavy
When I bought my house last year they had a 1HP (1.65THP) Pentair WFE-4 running 24 hours a day. I looked at buying a timer with freeze protection, but then I was half way to to cost of a replacement motor. I bought a vGreen 165 variable speed replacement motor and just swapped it onto the WFE-4 wet end with a new pump seal. Really happy with that decision.
I pay 17 cents per kilowatt hour. So my electric rates are higher than yours.
My solar heat is the panels that you pump water thru to heat the water. The pump has to run at a higher rpm to push the water thru them which is why my pump costs so much to run. $ 25 a month to run a VS pump is high compaired to a lot of people on the forum.
You only need to run the pump long enough to keep the pool clean. If you are manually adding liquid chlorine you only need to run the pump for about 30 min to mix the chemicals.
you can always read the SWG forum as well, and do searches in forums for specific topics you may be looking for. This place is epic, hence why I became a supporter after a year.
My Pentair VS pump was a great investment. I have it set to run full speed 3400 RPM at start up 6am to clean top of pool. At 7 am pump runs at 2800 till 9 am. Runs at 2200 till 3 pm. I can lower to 1800 also but it’s been windy here.
