Vortex at return

Kid,

Welcome to TFP... a great place to find the answers to all of your "swirling" questions...

I just want to make sure we are all talking about the same thing... Normally when we talk about a Vortex, sucking noise and bubbles, we are talking about the vortex that happens in the skimmer where the water is being set to the pump.. When we say "Return" we are generally talking about the eyeball fitting that return water back to the pool after the filter or heater.

Let us know for sure where you are experiencing this vortex.

It would also be handy if you could fill out your signature so that we would know what type of pool and equipment you have..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Welcome to TFP...
inhad this issue with one of my returns and I just unscrewed it (with pump off), rinsed it off and replaced. Problem was solved so perhaps it was a small piece of who knows what?? Updating signature would for sure help...

Same thing happens to my pool right after I clean the filter. With max water flow it creates a vortex at the return - seems to be worse if the eyeball is pointed down. After I clean the filter I adjust the jet up slightly so it's just level with the surface and that helps. After a few days when the flow reduces a bit it's not a problem. You could try working with the eyeball fitting or get a bigger eyeball which should reduce the pressure slightly and minimize the vortex.
