Based on some recommendations on TFP, I finally got around to replacing the motor of my Pentair WF-8 2HP with a V Green 270.

Now I'm a little perplexed on the best settings to run the pump on. I know folks will say I just need to experiment, but I was trying to see if there were some good rules of thumbs I could start with, and adjust from there:

I opened on Saturday and I'm currently in SLAM, and I have been running it in full power clean mode around the clock, but I'm anticipating I'll be done with that soon--water looks clean; just need to pass chlorine overnight. I use the TFP LC method.

I used to run my Pentair WF-8 2HP about 8-10 hours a day (turned it on before going to bed and turned it off in the morning), and that worked pretty well for my 44k pool.

I think the default on the Pentair is about half speed. Is it okay to leave it on that speed 24/7. Does that save a lot on energy vs. 8-10 hours of the 2HP? Will 24/7 be too much strain on the pump, even at the lower setting? The reason I like 24/7, is I live in a wooded area, so I figure if there is always flow towards the skimmers, less junk will end up on the bottom of the pool.

Also, to run my Rheem PM406A pool heater, is there a rule of thumb to make sure I'm getting enough flow when I want to use the heater? Should I just put it on Max when I'm using the heater (we only use it to warm the pool when we are going in on weekends, and to warm the hot tub).

Thanks for any advice.

Running the VSP at half speed (i.e. ~ 1700 rpm) is fine. The key for the SLAM is to keep the water moving and circulating that elevated FC level. Some VPS owners could even go lower. You might be able to as well, but your heater flow rate will determine that one. So if your heater is happy, a lower rpm is just fine. Hope that helps.

Thanks TS. Just to confirm:

1. For heater, try it on half speed, and if no flow errors, I'll keep it at that. If errors keep adjusting up until it passes.
2. On half speed, it's fine to run 24/7, or the motor needs a break?
3. I'll start on 24/7 half speed, and then try to work down a bit on usage.
4. I'm not running it on MAX just for the SLAM, but also to speed up the process of filtering out all the winter junk. The water looks good, but I use basket socks, and they are still accumulating a meaningful amount of dirt.

Yes to all of the above. My pump is on low 24/7/365. The only time I turn off my pump is for cleaning or maintenance at the pad. It won't hurt anything. No need to run at MAX speed for anything unless you have a large water demand like fountains, in-floor cleaning, etc. A faster speed won't really accelerate the SLAM. That just takes time/patience. Otherwise, run it on the low rpm that your heater can tolerate and save some $$$. That's what it's all about. :goodjob:
