Valve handle broke. How can I tell if it's open?

Do you have another of those ball valves on your system?

If so look where the notches line up with the handle position.

I don't, unfortunately. The handle says <SP> in a diamond and 2" under that.

It looks a lot like this:

But I can't quite make out in the pictures how the notches line up (or whether they would actually be the same)

No luck searching for the exact replacement. Anyone know if SP is a well-known valve manufacturer?

You should replace it with a diverter valve and not install another ball valve.

Diverter valves can be repaired and rebuilt and last many years.

Another ball valve will just do the same thing in a few years and stick and break the handle.

I think I'll just go turn the valve manually and have my wife feel for the pressure coming from the outlet until it feels "strongest"
Watch the pressure gauge on your filter. It'll tell you when flow is best. The higher the pressure, the lower the flow, and vice versa. That's assuming the valve is after the filter. If the valve is before the filter, uh, @JamesW?

If the pressure gauge pegs, that's bad, the valve is closed! Turn off the pump immediately and turn the valve 90° before you try again. Watch the gauge carefully as you turn on the pump. Some gauges go almost all the way around, and you might not recognize that it is pegged if you don't pay attention. Again, this applies if the valve comes after the filter.
