Valve Directions

Hi there. Just got this house and trying to figure out the valves. They both go three directions with only one side labeled inlet. There's a valve in the side of the pool and the skimmer basket, I'd like to vacuum from the skimmer basket. Could someone please help guide me on which way the valves go, which direction means what, etc. I also noticed that the jets in the pool were spitting back debris which I'll be replacing the filter but could the valve directions being off so this too? The filter is a cartridge filter. Thank you.

Welcome to TFP! The images below should help give you an idea. One of those 2 valves before the pump operates the skimmer, the other the main drain (or second skimmer). Looks like the first valve (left in pic #2) is closed, so if the poolside skimmer is pulling water you know the skimmer is valve #2 on the right. You can test which valve operates which item by turning it slightly open or closed as noted in the illustrations below. If you still don't see how that works let us know.

Joe,

The key here is the tab with the word "OFF".

As you can see in Pat's pics above, when the word "off" is pointed at a pipe, that pipe will be off.

In the Pat's first pic, the word "off" is not pointed at any pipe, so all three pipes are open.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I'll have to mess around with them and see which one gives the most suction to the skimmer. I appreciate the images. Is it usually better for both valves to be open then? Do you know where the pipes that go into the ground go to lead to? Just trying to figure it all out and them them accordingly. Thanks again.

Thank you. The off part of the valve with the pipe makes sense. I'm trying to figure out where the smaller pipe redirect to and if both valves need to be directing there or only one or what. I want to be able to mark them but clueless lol.

Smaller pipe with red-handled valve is a heater bypass that shouldn't be needed for that heater. It doesn't stop flow to the heater, just allows some to bypass. This was necessary on much older heaters but your heater should be able to handle full flow from your pump. Or, if it works for you, leave the handle as is, wide open.
