V-Green Motors - Consensus Opinion

What is the consensus opinion (if there is such a thing) on the Champion V-Green motors sold through inyo pools? I have found a few comments by searching the forum on folks that have bought the motor only and and it does seem like people have been fairly happy with the pureline pumps which have the V-green motors, but there still isn't a lot of information on these motors.

Short story is I am looking to change out a Pentair WF-28 2HP motor to either a dual speed (likely a champion brand as well unless someone points me to a better path) or to this V-green motor that I just found for energy efficiency purposes. The cost difference between those (2) options is not that great and I think the break even on both is about the same time frame of 3-years since the operating cost of the VS will be slightly less. With cheap electricity in Texas going with the cadillac (intelliflo) probably doesn't make sense unless the consensus is that the V-green is of poor quality.

For clarification I would go with the 2.7HP version of the V-Green as it appears to have a better control panel and I think the extra HP will be needed for my spa.

I'm very satisfied with my V-Green and believe the only slight weakness is easily addressed with a blob of sealant over the access cover bolt to be certain I'll never have a leak. In my case it was the only way I could get to a VS pump so that drove the initial decision. I would definitely do this over a 2-speed motor. My unit has only been operational for 5 months so it's early for me to claim total victory. Installation was a snap. Control was no problem using my Intellicenter automation and the very versatile digital inputs to select speed. It is very easy to configure at least 3 speeds. I think any brand automation could easily perform the speed control most would need. I have mine set up as follows:
  • I have mine powered the same as the previous pump for on and off via a relay in the automation
  • it runs at low speed set to ~1750 rpm unless called to high speed (~2800 rpm).
  • High speed is called if solar bypass closes indicating water has to flow to the panels on the roof. I use the signal that closes the valve actuator for this.
  • High speed is also called any time the gas valve is opened inside the gas heater. I did this by adding a wire that connects to the solenoid power to another digital input.
  • This motor powered the pump with no problems but being the tinkerer I am I increased the impeller size to the next size up so I better us the additional hp available. This isn't necessary in most cases but does get closer to the "matched pump and motor" benefit of a new complete pump. I think I could go even one step bigger and may do that some day.
All this said, if I had the money I'd go for the Cadillac which is the big Pentair you hear so much about... but couldn't get this approved by Sr. Management. I'm definitely happy with the less expensive choice so far.

I hope this helps.

I have a 20K pool with a spa and a water fall and bought the 1.65 hp one and run it at 1750 rpm..I keep my filter pressure around 4psi but works great..If you want the bigger one for more controls that cool but may not need the flow :)

So your waterfalls perform well even at 1,750 RPM? I don’t know why the previous owner/PB installed a separate 1hp pump for the (2) small water shears I have soI may re-plumb to have the option to run off the new pump and see how they do.

I installed the 2.7 two weeks ago. I purchased a larger impeller, seal plate, and diffuser to go with it. One thing I like about the 2.7 is it has an aux power block to power my SWCG, so the SWCG can’t be powered without the pump running.
I like that as well for future upgrade. Overall controller seems to have more options and y understanding is that it can be mounted remotely, can you confirm? Is that an add on kit or just additional wiring?

Yes, I run 80% of the water into the spa and it has a good stream. I could go lower but not as nice...Its more about the volume then pressure for my setup..I have a big 4 cartridge filter

Going on my 3rd season with a Pureline with 2.7 motor. It has performed well. Upgraded this season to a heavy duty seal due to slight seepage last year. I agree the 2.7 control is much more robust. Far too few programming options with the 1.65 for me.
