The most important pre-addition instructions are to make sure you have your pool chemistry in good order first. Borates are a nice addition but if you are dealing with algae or other chronic problems (a reason a lot of people are looking to jump on the borate train) then you need to correct these things first. If your chemistry house is in order and water clear then follow the instructions Richard provided.
