Daughter’s pool. It needed CYA, 30 reading, so they used a sock in the skimmer. The SWG is now reading high salt on the panel! My background(electrical engineer), tells me this is only because of the increased conductivity of the water as the dissolved CYA is passing through the cell. Logical, yes, but right?
Their concern is, the reason for a water exchange, was high salt! I believe, once the CYA is fully dissolved/mixed, the erroneous salt reading will drop

It’s better to hang the sock in the deep end in front of a return. Leaving it in the skimmer is not a good idea especially if the pump shuts off as an acidic stew will brew (concentrated solutions of CYA have a pH below 5). The low pH might be affecting the conductivity reading but it would probably settle down after the water starts flowing because CYA is so slow to dissolve.

You should purchase your own salt test kit (K-1766) and accurately determine the salt level for yourself.

44,

Tell your daughter that the first step in owning a saltwater is to have the ability to test the "actual" salt level in the water. You should never trust the cell's reported salt level, unless you have a way to verify it. I too recommend the Taylor K-1766 salt test kit. It works best with an automatic stir device like the Smart Stir.

Thanks,
