Hey folks, we are making the plunge to upgrade some very outdated equipment for our small 18' x 54" above ground. I've been researching and researching to upgrade to a programmable vsp, cartridge filter and a propane heater, basically starting from scratch. Anyway, thought I would put it out there for your experience and suggestions. One issue I am having is that I only need a 1hp vsp, but I cannot find a 1hp that is programmable, just 3 speed settings. If that is the case, would upping to a 1.5hp add undo stress other components?

When you program a VSP, you change the horsepower rating when changing speeds. A larger total horsepower VS pump can be slowed, use less energy and move the same amount of water for less energy use than a smaller total horsepower VS pump.
Buying a pump based on horsepower rating alone is a big mistake.
Pentair made various lines of single-speed pumps in the past. The Dynamo, SuperFlo, WhisperFlo. They all had 1hp versions. While they all used about the same amount of energy, the amount of work done for that energy was very different.
Pumps are now labeled with a WEF (weighted energy factor) more than horsepower. A good explanation is here:
