Two pumps, one on the outlet (after filter & heater)?

Hey all, new here, but have lurked before. I recently moved into a new house and the pool filter system has an extra motor, with a valve to cut off the input. I cannot tell for sure where the output of it goes, but it enters the ground parallel to the lines going back to the pool. (picture below):

Any ideas what this is? My best guess is that it's some kind of booster pump maybe? I'm a little worried to run it without knowing much about it, but I'm thinking it will be safe to run it only when the main pump is running.

R,

That is called a booster pump and it is used to drive a pressure side pool cleaner..

If you don't have a pressure side cleaner, there is no reason to turn it on..

1970's technology...

Thanks,

Jim R,
