Two lines into pump but no main drain

I moved into a home with a pool late last year. It's coming time to open it very soon, and I think I've got it mostly figured out.

One thing that puzzles me is our pool is very simple. It's a vinyl pool with a single skimmer and no main drain. Yet the pump has two lines coming into it, each with a valve. The pool is currently closed, and one line is closed, the other open. Does anyone have any idea where the other line could be plumbed to?

My first guess is a main drain that's no longer used, but really have no idea. Regardless, for opening, is it safe to just open the one line that was closed (had a pool company do the closing last year) or should both be open?

1 is probably an old main drain that stopped working so they closed it and did not cut it in when the new liner was installed...
