Trees Close to Pool

We have not broken ground yet on our pool. But I know for a fact at least two or three trees will need to be taken out of our yard to make room for the pool and equipment access. There are a few other trees that are not right in the way of the dig area but might drop a lot of debris into the pool later. These are mostly water oaks in the 10" to 15" diameter range. Is there an ideal distance from the pool that trees should be cleared?

The farther the better for debris and shade (unless you want/need shade for cooler water - not in MD but maybe in GA). As for debris, if you have trees nearby, their debris will find your pool, promise. Overhanging branches of course are bad, but really tall trees within 50-100' can still litter your pool. But obviously the further away the better. It also depends on your prevailing winds, and also your prevailing winds during periods of debris production (i.e. tassels in spring and leaves in fall).

If I had to give a number, I'd say 50'. I had a medium sized tree that dropped really small leaves beginning in July. The trunk was roughly 30' from one edge. I can tell you they found my pool REALLY well. And to boot, the leaves were so small, the water would push them up on the waterline tile and they would stick and stay there. Tree lasted about 1 year after we built the pool before it became firewood.

If there is a tree within sight of the pool the leaves WILL find there way over to your water.

Welp... I bought a chainsaw a few weeks ago and I have a fire pit. Maybe I will just push the tree line back little by little. Thanks, guys.

I'm in Augusta, near you. We had taken out about 12 trees to put the pool in, and yet are still surrounded by trees somewhat like your pic.

The only problem (if it can be considered one?) is that those trees really still provide shade as the sun crosses my yard. How your yard is faced along the sun's path may make your pool more or less shaded, and that can affect how warm the pool gets naturally.

sidenote: I commend you on using black fencing instead of the silver stuff. I really feel black disappears from view almost and is a better choice.

Which ever way the wind blows toward your pool, take down those trees.:eye:

We have neighbor's trees 20 ft away on the southeast side and their leaves drop in our pool daily. Our tree with branches that overhang our deck next to the pool on the northwest side rarely drop leaves in our pool on a daily basis, but it does drop seed pods and buds in the spring and fall. We make sure our winter cover is on while that is happening. It helps a lot.

Thank you. I like the black fence too. We just had it installed late last year (finished construction on the house around September). But now our PB says we need to take it down so that they can do the dig. We are hoping that we can re-use most of it when it goes back up to save a little money. We were originally thinking the pool would go on the other side but there is a power line there and we don't have enough clearance between the line and the fence.

You are going to get debris with that many trees, no big deal, happens to everyone. BUt the bigger issue is shade/sun. I have no idea what the compass directions are for that layout, but you want to place the pool in the sun as much as possible. For this, the trees will matter a ton. So do yoruself a favor, and go out and monitro the shade/sun line in yoru yard from 10am to 4pm, and try to remove whatever treese needed to maximize sun. Also, if needed slide the pool closer to teh house, further from teh house, left or right to maximize this as well.
