I am new to owning a pool (2nd year). After our install last year I was only testing 4 parameters, now I am testing 7. This year I am testing total chlorine as well as free. Here is where I discovered an issue I have yet to correct. My total chlorine is showing 10ppm and free 3ppm. I know I need to shock the pool. Do I need to raise the chlorine levels to 70ppm in order to get rid of the 7ppm combined chlorine? Will this damage any of my pool equipment? This seem very high to me.

Welcome to TFP! What test kit are you using to test the water, and how/where did you determine that an FC of 70 was required?

Also tell us what product(s) you have been using to chlorinate the water on a daily basis.

I am using AquaChek Select test strips. I read a few articles online that said in order to get rid of chloramines you need to shock at 10x the level of CC in your pool.
