Total chlorine and free chlorine both tested at 10ppm. Should I shock it are wait for it to come down?

Hello and welcome to TFP! Where did you test at?
Just for the quick answer, TC and FC should be equal. Or within .5 of each other.

TC (total chlorine) = FC (free chlorine) + CC (combined chlorine)

Anything more than .5 CC is bad. (Thanks for the catch @jimbethesda.)

I used both clorox test strips and bottle regent test. I’m not sure how all this chlorine works.

Hmmmm. Okay. I tested away from the skimmer and about elbow length down

That’s correct. You want to be as far away from any return jet or skimmer / suction port.

If they are on opposite sides of the pool, go to the middle between them. And 12-18” is correct:

I’ll encourage you to read Pool Care Basics, which is apart of Pool School. Also get the PoolMath app and use it.

As Jim mentioned, 10 ppm FC is just fine for CYA of 50. Slightly above the “target range”, but fine as you’ll lose that FC to UV quickly.

Blaming that one on my iPhone autocorrect. I actually point those out to folks as well. Same with they’re, there, their. Affect, effect is a fun one. And then I realized it out FC instead of CC. Even better. Lol! No more mixing and posting for me. Thanks for the correction! Though what’s the issue with no FC? Makes y’all have more fun around here. Yeah?
