Happy new year!

I have an old Val-Mar in-ground hybrid pool (concrete bowl, fiberglass sides) that appears to be leaking somewhere in the side panels. This is typical for pools of this type/age, and according to the wiki article there are a few options I can pursue to fix it. I was wondering if there were any other Canucks on here with similar pools who had any luck refurbishing or converting to liner pools. I know of this thread already but there was no reply.

That thread was a great resource, thank you! Hoping to find someone up here who can do something similar.

When you search 'hybrid pool' above, click on any relevant members name in a thread and most profiles will say 'last visited XXXX'. You can kinda judge from there if they might pop back in, but most northerners have been long closed right now.

Tag anybody who might respond with the @ symbol, @Newdude, for example, right here in this thread.

I have more luck searching by clicking the setting wheel to the right of the search field after you hit the looking glass icon. Then click advanced search and you can search either by relevance or date.

An update for anyone interested: I've been gathering quotes from contractors and there seem to be two options short of building an entirely new pool.
  1. Install a 67 mil vinyl membrane from CGT. This would be welded to the existing pool walls + bowl.
  2. Excavate behind the existing fiberglass walls, install steel walls, attach them to the existing concrete bowl, back fill and finally install a vinyl liner.

I can only imagine that we would be out of your budget, but this is another option for hybrid pools. We have done hundreds of them with great success.

We have done projects from Guam to Alaska, and I have looked into working in Canada in the past. Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

Unfortunately our weak dollar means that working with US contractors is 30-40% more expensive right off the bat, but thank you for offering!

Just wanted to provide an update for any other Toronto pool people with this problem. Here are a list of companies that offered solutions/had some experience with this type of pool:
  • Solda
  • Gib-San
  • Bonavista (they used to install these back in the day when people were still building them)
  • Betz
  • Aquaspa
  • Pioneer Family Pools
Solutions ranged from renovating and pouring a new concrete pool in the existing pool footprint, or using the existing concrete bowl with steel walls and then a vinyl liner. We chose the former for a long term solution with better peace of mind.

Thanks for the update. I added it to Hybrid Pools - Further Reading
