We just put in a 2900Gal above ground pool in this year here in Arizona. I’ve been learning how to take care of the chemicals and already lost the battle against algae once. Not knowing any better, I was relying on my local Leslie’s to help me troubleshoot. Since then, I’ve found TFP and feel like I’m actually learning.
After draining, brushing, vacuuming and doing a clean of the walls, and all the cracks and crevices, I filled the pool back up, put in my CYA (Granules that I have from Leslie’s) using the sock method and the Pool math app for the suggested amount. It suggested 17oz and I had a 16oz bag. Then I put in liquid chlorine (10% from Walmart) at roughly 16 oz (again per pool math app). The pool looks amazing now but problem I’m having is my FC is testing around 17/18 ppm! I’m using the TF-100 kit so it should be pretty accurate, but it does sound like the CYA test is somewhat subjective. It started off higher and now it’s at that 17/18. I ended up putting another 14 oz of CYA yesterday because the CYA test was low (10-20) and pool math suggested that amount. CYA was testing at 30-40 today and I know it could get bumped to 50-60 but I wanted guidance before making more changes.
I’m trying to figure out where I went wrong on the chlorine and what I can do to get it to a level where we can swim. My family has been patient the last month while I’ve fought algae, emptied, refilled, and now have too high of chlorine. Any suggestions?
For the the TLDR: CYA is currently 30-40 and FC is 17/18… how can I lower the chlorine so we can use the pool.
