To add CYA or not

Hey everyone!

Been reading some through the forums trying to find an answer. As of now I am leaning towards adding more stabilizer.

We had a lot of rain and snow here in SW Michigan and I opened my pool to a swamp yesterday. I took a sample of water yesterday and my CYA was at zero. I thought I would let the water circulate for a bit and test again. I began my SLAM process based on last years readings which were between 25 and 30. I brought the FC up to 12. After a bit the water turned milky green and it was that way this morning. I again got a sample let it sit for a bit and then tested CYA again and it was at 0.

Right now my CC is at 2, which is normal since my water is still green. I don't think I have an issue with ammonia since my FC tends to drop pretty consitant with a green pool meaning, I'm not losing a huge amount too quickly.

Would it be safe to add CYA, or should I wait a bit still?

You need to get cya in there since your fc will be 0 in a matter of minutes no matter how much bleach you dump in. Id use pool math and figure out how much cya to add to get it to 30-40 then add the appropriate amount of bleach as per pool math to start slam. Test every hour to keep the bleach at slam level. Follow the slam process to a t and enjoy your nice tfp pool.

That's what's throwing me off. I brought my FC up to 12 about 3 hours ago. I just checked it and it as at 7. Now I'm sure there is still some debris on the bottom, I just brushed the pool for the first time this year after opening it about 5 hours ago. My pool is still green but it is more a dull green. I thought with no CYA in my pool that 12ppm would be 0 within an hour or so.

Not to puzzling i think. Where are you located? Sounds like you don't have to concentrated sun. With no cya i have seen my pool drop 4ppm of fc in an hour. That was cloudy day and no foreign objects in the pool. Well that i can see. Now ive also seen only 2ppm loss in two days with 40 cya. Have you done a full range of tests? Im just curious about that but cya first then bleach but i wouldnt let it get too low.

Thanks for your reply.

I went ahead and added some CYA. Enough to get me up to 20. Going to test after and if it reads around 20 I'm going to add enough to get up to 30.

Why do you have to wait so long to backwash after it is dissolved and testing accurately?
